Western Red Cedar Split Rails are offered in three sizes, Jumbo, Standard, and Pony weight. This refers primarily to the rail girth, measurement around the fence rail. The hole and tenon dimensions are the same on all components amongst grades of our cedar split fencing, so they're universal in the sense that any post and any rail will fit together.
Advantages - Cedar split rail fence is one of the most cost effective styles for defining boundaries, decorating property, and fencing in livestock and horses. Split rail fencing is also one of, if not the easiest style of fence to install making it an ideal project for the do-it-yourselfer. Posts are typically set directly in the ground approx. 30" deep without any concrete. A tamping bar is used to compact the dirt around the post while backfilling.
Disadvantages - It is typical to have to re-tamp posts plumb after the ground settles around post so that the fence remains upright. This is especially true if the fence is installed in a wet area or it was wet when the fence was originally installed. Pouring gravel around the posts instead of backfilling with dirt will help prevent posts from leaning under the heavy weight of the rails and will also help with proper drainage of water away from the posts. Fence requires a preservative for the longest-lasting performance, however most installations are never treated.
ORDERING NOTES:
Western Red Cedar Split Rail Fence is a style of fence that is component driven. Most wood fence styles utilize fence panels, but this rustic style is made up of posts and individual rails. This fence is readily available in 2-Rail and 3-Rail styles, while the 4-Rail has a 4 to 6 week lead time as it is special order.
A complete section of 2-Rail fence would include (2) Posts, and (2) Rails of your choice. A 3-Rail fence section would include (2) Posts and (3) Rails of your choice. Likewise, a 4-Rail fence section would consist of (2) Posts and (4) Rails.
All posts used in this fence system are the same Jumbo grade materials. The differing factor are the Rails, which are available in Pony, Standard, and Jumbo Grades.
Bundle Quantities as Follows:
Truckload Pricing - We are pleased to offer competitive discounts based on volume purchases and cumulative sales. A full semi truckload will require the purchase of approximately 20 units (bundles) of rails/ posts.
Small Orders - Due to the dimensions of this product, orders must ship via Common Carrier. This will typically make smaller orders cost prohibitive, expect freight to start around $425. We can ship small amounts of Pony Size Rails via Small Parcel Carriers, but their over-length charges will be expensive as well. You may pick orders up from our facility to avoid shipping charges.

Thank you for writing! Pony, Standard, and Jumbo all refer to different grades of Western Red Cedar split rails. The rails are graded by girth, that is the measurement around the rail, and length. That said there are still some other differences.
Let's start with Pony, the smallest rail, in both length and girth. The Pony rails are sized so that the average girth is 9" to 12". These rails are 8' long and are sold in bundles of 200.
Next up is Standard Grade, the middle of the road. Standard rails are sized and sorted so that the average girth is 10" to 12". The Standard rails are 10' long and sold in bundles of 155.
Last up is the Jumbo, our largest grade of rails. Jumbo rails are sized and sorted so that the average girth is 12" and up. Jumbo rails are 10' long as well but are sold in bundles of 110.
Here is a picture of a side by side comparison of the rails (Click to Enlarge):
With the sizing out of the way, there are still some considerations to make. One thing to consider is that since the Pony Rails are only 8' long, you will require more posts compared to the Jumbo and Standard. Another is pricing, as the grades go up, the pricing increases.
One last note is that all of our posts are Jumbo grade, the largest available. Thanks for your time and I hope this answers your questions!
Here are some wonderful pictures from our customer Herb down in Big Stone Gap, VA of a stair-stepped installation 3-Rail Standard Western Red Cedar split rail fencing. Stair stepping is a way to install fencing when the grade change is too drastic to simply follow with the fence sections.
Customer Comments:
"First picture shows the parking area was no problem at all as it was level. The turn and drop from the parking area to the house was 7 ft. So in the other pictures it shows that we used all end posts. Each lower post in the section was plumed 18 inches above the pavement to the lowest hole and a 2x4x16ft was inserted in the lowest hole and marked level to the uphill post. Middle and top holes were marked and drilled to accept the 3 rails. All posts were inserted into a flue block with a solid brick to stand on with 3/8ths inch gravel for packing. We are planning to re-stain the house this fall to match the beautiful fence. Neighbors and strangers visiting Skeens Ridge stop, look and dream! Thanks again."
Thank you very much for the pictures Herb - The project looks wonderful!
Here are some before and after pictures from our customer Eddie down in Remlap, AL who installed just under 500' of our 3-Rail Jumbo Grade Western Red Cedar split rail fence. The fence looks great Eddie - thank you for the photos and for the kind remarks!

I am 73 & built the Hoover two rail split rail fence in the front of my home in 8 days. I have never had so many individuals stop & explain how much they enjoyed the fence. In this hi-tech age you guys have a product that is rare. Thanks many times over for providing me a quality product that stops cars & trucks just to take a look!
Just wanted to pass along a thanks to your driver. Delivered on time Wednesday and stacked it up nice and neat where I wanted it. Excellent job. I will count and double-check the number of post and rails this weekend but I foresee no issues. Also wanted to say I love the rustic look of the fence. The 'rough-cut' look really makes it stand out versus other split rail fence types that you can buy in the large box stores. It will look good in the back yard of our 2 acres, I'll pass along some photos when it's finished in a couple weeks.
Easy to install and looks beautiful!
